Designed to encourage and inspire young women from all around the world to pursue careers in science and technology, TechGirls is an international summer exchange program.
The TechGirls program is a four-week summer exchange (July 8–August 3, 2022) that aims to encourage and support young women (ages 15–17) to pursue STEM-related higher education and careers.
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs launched the TechGirls initiative. Designed to encourage and inspire young women from all around the world to pursue careers in science and technology, TechGirls is an international summer exchange program.

Since 2012, 343 teenage females (ages 15–17) from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, the Palestinian Territories, Tunisia, and Yemen have received training and mentoring from TechGirls. 2019 saw the program’s inclusion of young women from Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan).
The program will grow in 2022 to support over 111 young women from 36 participating countries and 25 American peers in an exciting four-week experience in the United States with an 8-month mentorship program (including pre- and post-exchange).
The main component of the curriculum is a 27-day trip to the US in cooperation with Virginia Tech University. The TechGirls attend a hands-on computer and technology camp before traveling to one of the following cities: Austin, Chicago, Cincinnati, Denver, Detroit, Portland, or Seattle for a job shadowing experience at a tech business as well as homestay and volunteer opportunities. The TechGirls program has a multiplier effect as participants go back to their communities and carry out projects with mentorship for five months.

Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Mongolia, Taiwan, and Vietnam are all part of East Asia and the Pacific (EAP).
Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian Territories, Tunisia, and the Middle East and North Africa (NEA)
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan are all countries in South and Central Asia (SCA).
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Suriname make up the Western Hemisphere (WHA).
Albania, Cyprus, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, and Turkey are all part of Europe and Eurasia (in EUR).
