World Best Messi reportedly confirms staying at Barca to Laporta

Today According to Barcelona-based journalist Miguel Rico and carried by fellow Barcelona-based writer Samuel Marsden, Lionel Messi has reportedly assured Joan Laporta that he will sign a new deal with the club.

Messi will first sign a one-year contract before signing a longer-term contract in 2022, when the pay ceiling will be less restrictive and Barcelona’s financial situation would be more stable.

A bit of movement on Messi, perhaps. @migrico says he’s told Laporta he will sign new deal (one year at first due to salary cap but will sign for longer in 2022)… & Laporta plugging a Messi documentary on Catalan TV later tonight. “Don’t miss it.” Could be unrelated, of course.

Messi turns 34 this week, and his contract with Barcelona expires on June 30th, marking the first time he hasn’t been under contract with the club since he arrived in Catalonia as a pimply-faced youngster.

No one can deny Messi is still playing at a high level, but he is not in decline. Last season, Messi scored 30 goals and added eleven assists in 35 La Liga outings.

Barcelona, on the other hand, collapsed at the end of the season, squandering a good position in the title battle and being humiliated in the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain.

The Blaugrana, on the other hand, won the Copa del Rey, with Messi, naturally, at the center of their victory. The Argentine scored a brace and was named Player of the Match in the 4-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the final at La Cartuja.
